Dollar bills, a 20 Euro cents coin, 100 Sterling Pound and 50 Shekel bill… Who doesn’t like to have these in their pocket. Honestly, most people aren’t having any cash with them these days. A debit or a credit card is what we use.
More and more the NFC from our phones is used to pay our gasoline, a cup of coffee, groceries or a chocolate cookie and ice cream.
There is a lot of technology behind this “simple” way of payment.
Like the high resolution TFT, including a capacitive touch-screen with an industrial interface from Yeebo, that can interface with the system. The Summit Electronics tactile switches are, in combination with the TFT, the HIM (Human Interface Machine) to control the system, add pin codes and even so important adding a tip.
A RFID, NFC reader from Elatec is small and has a dedicated antenna on board. It is using security-features to make payments safe. Protocols, like Mifare, are used.
The brain of the system could be a smart module from Quectel. The LTE Cat 4 smart module for example, has Android or Linux OS and could be connected to Bluetooth, WiFi. It could give an extra safety to use the GNSS as well.
The MIPI interface is for example supporting video to add a camera to the unit for face recognition and/or safety. The 4G or 5G cellular connection is good for high speed down-link (>100Mbps) and is backward compatible. This is for the full save connection to the payment service provider.
The WiFi and Bluetooth is good for communication with the ordering unit from the bartenders, or to send ordering information to the kitchen. The BT serial adapters from LM Technologies are often used to connect old fashion kitchen printers to the EPOS systems.
To give the user/customer feedback on the success of a payment. Or to ask for more data, audio is a good solution for better experience. The combination of a Tempo Semiconductor audio codec and speakers from CUI Devices are high quality audio solutions. To print the receipt, a small motor from Sanyo Denki is needed to spit out the paper.
Powering the devices or to charge the batteries, a 20~100W power adapter from FSP Technology can do the job.
